Categories in WordPress
Categories in WordPress post is a method to group your Posts on the website. Categories act as Labels that can be applied to the Posts to group them.
A category showcases a topic or a group of topics that are connected to one another in some way. For example, on this website, I have created 4 Categories and tagged my Posts in those categories. Thus, I have grouped my posts as shown below ( Red Box)

Thus, when a visitor clicks on any of the categories, the person will easily access the posts that are present in that category
Tags in WordPress
Tags help us identify a particular type of WordPress Post. Tags are used preferably in Internal Organisation
In the example above, I have created a Category named – Content Creation and Strategy Lane and there are a few Posts present in that Category. Now, in each of the posts, I have added Tags.
In one of my posts: Top Web hosting Companies for WordPress Sites and Blog, I have added tags like Hosting, Cheap Hosting, and Website Hosting. These tags describe the nature of my Post by adding an extended meaning to it.

Most importantly, just like Categories, you can also assign tags when editing a blog post as shown below. In case you use Related Posts widgets or features, you can use tags to group your Posts
SEO optimize Categories and Tags in WordPress
One can easily SEO Optimise Categories and Tags using Yoast SEO Plugin. Once you have installed the plugin,
Follow the below steps
- You can choose Yes and Show Categories in Search results (Preferred)
- You can design a Title for Each Category and Have a Meta Description
- I do not prefer showing Tags in the google search result but you may choose to differ here
- You can design a Title for Each Category and Have a Meta Description
